The sitz bath originated in Europe a long time ago. The name comes from a german word “sitzen” which means “to sit” in English. Nowadays sitz baths are used as a form of pain relief and local cleansing for people who suffer hemorrhoids, abdomen cramps, anal fissures, yeast infections, and genital herpes.
A sitz bath is a form of bathing where the bottom and hips are immersed in warm or cold water for a period of time, 15 – 20 minutes is ideal. Warm sitz baths are best for cleansing the area while cool sitz baths help to ease swelling and can even help with constipation. Sitz baths will decrease inflamation of hemorrhoids as well as easing discomfort.
Sitz baths can be used with water by itself or you can add other forms of solutions (such as lavender) to the water. A simple trick is to add salt, or baking soda to the water and allow yourself to soak in the water for 20 minutes. This trick works to clean the affected area as well as relieving pain.
How to have a Sitz Bath
Add approximately 5 inches of warm (or cold) water to the bath tub. Squat in the bath tub (or sit if pain isn’t too bad) with your buttocks full immersed in the water. Remain in the water for 15 - 20 minutes. Don’t add soap to the water as this can be irritating if you have any type of anal infection or irritation.
After the sits bath gentle dry the affected area with a soft towel.
Using a bath tub for sitz baths is fine however you may want to invest in a specifically designed apparatus which can be placed over the toilet bowl and filled with water. These are not expensive and offer a more comfortable way of having a sitz bath. Ask you local doctor if you want to buy a sitz bath.
While sitz baths do help to ease hemorrhoid pain and promote healing, they should of course be used in conjunction with the other techniques mentioned on this site. If you combine a couple of sitz baths per day with a good healthy diet (high in fiber), plenty of fluid intake and regular exercise the results you will get will be even better.
If you are not noticing good results from using a sitz bath, if you hemorrhoids seem to be getting worse, or if the results seem to wear off after a period of time, we suggest looking at a more advanced method of hemorrhoid treatment such as the system developed by Holly Hayden called H Miracle.
H Miracle details a range of solutions including ancient Chinese methods (which work extremely well by the way) for curing hemorrhoids. Check out our detailed review of H Miracle today.
